How to dab: How to avoid burning shatter

Dabbing is the flash vaporization process of concentrated dabs, also known as dabs in high temperatures, and is performed using the use of a dab rig, an e-rig also known as a dab pen. We’ll focus on traditional dabbing using the dab rig in this guide.

There’s a little process of learning with dabbing and if you’ve not done it before, it can be beneficial to ask someone experienced with it to teach you how.

The most important thing to remember while dabbing:

  • Dabs are concentrated forms of cannabis. Therefore, the smallest amount can go a lot. The flower ranges from 15-25% THC, while dabs are between 60-90% THC.
  • The temperature of the nail is important when dabbing: If the nail is too hot, it’s likely to scorch terpenes and cause an exaggerated cough.
  • Steer clear of an extremely hot nail. It’ll be hotter than an ice bowl or lighter.

What is a dab rig?

Dab rigs are water pipe that is used to inhale dab. It looks like an old bong with a chamber in which water is stored to cool vapor. However, as opposed to a pot for flowers as in a bong, a dab pipe has a nail to help with concentrates.

How does a dab-rig work?

For a dab to be taken, the nail of the dab rig can be heated with an electric torch, and then allowed for it to cool to the desired temperature. A cannabis concentrate is then placed inside the dab rig parts known as the nails and the extreme heat evaporates it. The carb cap is placed over the nail and the dabber inhales, controlling the airflow with its carb cap.

Vapor is released from the nail into its main chamber and then is cooled with water before hitting the dabber’s lung.

How to make dabs

Before you can dab before you begin dabbing, it is crucial to know that solvent concentrates, such as shatter and crumble, wax, honey, jelly, and more are made using chemicals like butane. As such, these concentrates are only made by a certified technician equipped with proper equipment, and cannot be prepared at home.

Solvents should be eliminated from extractions to ensure that they are safe to consume. Only a professional licensed by a market that is legal will be able to perform this. Improper solvent extraction procedures could be hazardous and result in the release of harmful fumes, and possibly explosions.

However, some solventless dabs can be made at home by using cannabis flowers and basic household tools.
